about

Carl Orff’s setting of the Carmina Burana is in part derived from medieval sources discovered in the Benediktbeuern Abbey in Bavaria. Orff’s work can be described as a cantata for the stage, featuring choir, orchestra & a large battery of percussion. Rhythm emerges as a prominent stylistic feature and provides the foundation for an interpretation on solo guitar.

The idea of a single guitar taking on a huge orchestral masterpiece might seem audacious, but Orff tends to strip his music down to its raw ingredients with no complicated harmony or melody. The actual musical language, apart from the extravagant orchestration is uncluttered & almost stark.

In the European summer of 1995 in Vienna I began a draft version of the Carmina Burana for Solo Guitar. Transcribing the medieval & folk-inspired movements came first, which ultimately led to the daunting challenge of tackling the mighty opening chorus O Fortuna. In an attempt to interest record companies in the project I recorded a ‘demo’ version in a single take in a Viennese cellar!

My publishers & several record companies showed great interest in the guitar version, but were blocked by the European copyright holders. This prompted my return to Australia to record the work.

The studio recording of Carmina Burana for Solo Guitar was completed in 1997 in Newcastle Australia at the Christ Church Cathedral. The natural resonance & ambience of the cathedral compliment the recording which was completed in three consecutive nights. There are no added effects to this recording which is completely natural & live sounding.

Recording the Carmina Burana is the synthesis of a lifelong interest in medieval music and the desire to create an exciting and unique live performance piece for guitar.
