Gone to Earth

about

Gone to Earth is a homage honouring our extinct Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine). The lyrics are inspired by Tasmanian poet Vivian Smith, who published his poem Thylacine in 1953. The song carries a broad environmental message, advocating for the preservation of nature & wilderness. It seems timely to emphasise the intersection of music & nature, & the potential role of music in promoting ecological awareness.

Early popular music exploring environmental topics can be traced back to gospel, blues & folk music. The message can be overtly activist, or alternately more subtle, in which trees, streams or other natural phenomena are personified & revered in the tradition of paganism. A bond with nature is also present in Western Art (classical) Music. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony is an exuberant celebration of nature, while Schubert’s Song Cycles express a reverence for the natural world & our relationship within it.
